Arne Vodder  1926 -2009

Danish architect and designer Arne Vodder was counted among the most influential Scandinavian mid-century designers. His beautiful designs were nicely detailed and modest in their expression, almost without exception based on natural materials.

Rosewood and teak - according to the fashion at the time, seem to have been the preferred materials. Today, Vodder is perhaps most appreciated for his beautiful rosewood and teak sideboards designed in the 1950-1960's and produced by Sibast Furniture.

Arne Vodder was taught by Finn Juhl, his friend and later partner, and designed a series of furniture in the 1950’s and 1960’s, when Denmark really became known as an international design nation. Yet his name is not known at home in the same degree as others of his contemporaries as Børge Mogensen and Arne Jacobsen.

The style is simple and modest and natural materials are allowed to step forward in the designs clean lines. Particularly well known is his rosewood sideboard, where the drawers in the front is designed so there is no need for handles, while those serving as decoration in itself. The sideboard illustrates long-term durability, which characterized the Vodder design, with his mix of materials. For example, the combination of exotic woods and colored panels..

From 1950’s Arne Vodder designed for the furniture manufacturer Sibast, where a range of office furniture was produced with success, particularly on the U.S. market. This to such an extent that his fans spoke President Jimmy Carter and Libya's notorious leader Muammar Abu Minyar al-Gaddafi.
